Rain is a city in Germany, located in the district of Donau-Ries, in the state of Bavaria.
Rain is located on the banks of the River Lech, close to its confluence with the Danube, 11 km east of Donauwörth. The city can be accessed via the B16 road and also via the Ingolstadt–Neuoffingen railway (part of the Danube Valley Railway – Donautalbahn), both between Ulm and Regensburg.

Brief History of Rain am Lech
Rain am Lech was first mentioned in a document from the Niederschönenfeld Monastery dated July 4, 1257, where it was described as a ducal city. Historians believe it was founded shortly before that date, likely during the reign of Otto II Wittelsbach or Louis II, Dukes of Bavaria. Its location on the River Lech gave it both economic and strategic importance.
The town was established to strengthen Bavaria’s northwestern frontier and to collect tolls from the bridge crossing the Lech. Thanks to its position, Rain became an important defensive and commercial center during the Middle Ages.
Rain is best known for the Battle of Rain am Lech, fought on April 15, 1632, during the Thirty Years’ War. The Protestant forces of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden defeated the Catholic League army led by Count Johann Tserclaes von Tilly, who was seriously wounded during the battle and later died in Ingolstadt. The defeat opened the way for the Swedish army to advance through Bavaria toward Munich.
Today, Rain preserves several historic landmarks, including the late Gothic Church of St. John the Baptist, the Swabian Gate, the historic hospital with the Chapel of All Saints, and the old castle. Visitors can also explore three museums, including the Lachner Brothers Museum, dedicated to the four 19th-century composer brothers born in the town, while a monument to Count von Tilly stands in front of the Town Hall, commemorating the famous battle.

Marvel at the gardens in the Dehner Flower Park, have a lakeside picnic in the city park, admire the brightness of colors in the Freche Garden or take a stroll among the picturesque flower beds around the palace.

Rain, the city of flowers, was founded over 750 years ago as the northwest stronghold of ancient Bavaria and was endowed with many privileges, such as city and market rights and the collection of customs duties. Remains of the city wall and the old city fortifications are still visible as evidence of the former fortress. The Schwabtor, a former city gate, has also been rebuilt.

- This is the crown jewel of the city. A massive, 30,000 m² showcase garden that beautifully blends English, Mediterranean, and Asian landscaping. Don’t miss the tranquil Japanese garden—complete with waterfalls and bonsai trees—and the vibrant rhododendron grove if you are visiting from May onward. Best of all? It even features a dedicated space for birds like flamingos and peacocks.
- Altstadt (Historic Old Town)
- The heart of Rain is its main street, lined with beautifully preserved 17th and 18th-century townhouses. It’s the perfect place for a slow stroll past the Marienbrunnen fountain toward the central square.
- Rococo Rathaus (City Hall)
- Built between 1759 and 1762, this striking building features a gorgeous Rococo facade. The iconic Tilly monument sits right in front of it.
- Leutnantschanze and Ziegelschanze
- Nature on the walls testifies to the Rain fortifications, so important until the 18th century, and the beautiful green belt invites you to take a walk. The Schwabtor has been rebuilt according to historical aspects.
- Schloss (Old castle)
- The official ducal residence from the 15th century is a magnificent and majestic building, despite the loss of the defensive moat and modifications
- Mariengrotte (Mary’s Grotto)
- In a niche of this cave of stalactites stands the sublime and youthful figure of Mary as the central figure. The grotto is densely surrounded by bushes and trees and is one of the most idyllic places in the old town.
- Heimatmuseum (Local museum)
- In the permanent exhibition, the culture of clothing, care for the home and clothes, the guild and the craft of hatters and chimney sweeps, the history of the village with the salt trade and the Battle of the Rain in 1632 are on display , the works of the monastery and sacred art.
- Schwabtor
- The Schwabtor (Swabian Gate) was one of the original medieval entryways to the city fortress. Though heavily altered over the centuries, the gate tower was reconstructed in 1973 based on historical designs, and the surrounding green belt (Leutnantschanze) offers a lovely walking path.
As you can see, although the city is not very big, there are several interesting places to visit that make the trip worthwhile.

Our suggestion in Rain is to divide your script into two parts:
- You can start your tour at Dehner Blumenpark, admiring the flowers, gardens and decorations (hoping of course that the day is sunny and beautiful).
