Things to do in Donauwörth in Germany
Donauwörth officially gained city status around 1180, but its historical footprint dates back to the 5th century. Because of its strategic river location, it became a frequent flashpoint in European conflicts. Tension between its Lutheran majority and Catholic residents in 1606 served as one of the direct catalysts for the devastating Thirty Years’ War.
Centuries later, during the final days of World War II in April 1945, heavy air raids flattened nearly three-quarters of the historic center. Remarkably, the town was meticulously and faithfully rebuilt in the decades that followed, restoring its gorgeous medieval and baroque character.
Top tourist attractions
The city of Donauwörth is crossed by 2 rivers: the Danube and the river Wörnitz. As you can see, it is quite small, with few streets that can be visited in a short time.

On the map you can see several parking lots to park your car and then go for a walk. Let’s list the points to be visited with reference to Reichstraße, a street with colorful houses.
The main tourist attractions that can be included in your travel itinerary in Donauwörth are:
Reichsstraße (Imperial Street): This is the crown jewel of Donauwörth and the perfect place to start your walk. This sloping avenue is famous for its breathtaking row of grand, colorful patrician houses. Although heavily damaged in 1945, the street was rebuilt with historical precision, capturing its original medieval pomp.
Liebfrauenmünster (Church of Our Lady): Standing proudly at the highest point of Reichsstraße, this striking 15th-century Gothic brick church dominates the skyline. Inside, look out for the Pummerin—the largest church bell in the Swabia region—as well as precious historic artwork, including a Pietá from 1505.
The Historic Rathaus & Marienbrunnen: Located at the foot of Reichsstraße, the town hall dates back to 1236. To celebrate its 750th anniversary, a carillon (set of bells) was installed that plays traditional folk tunes and opera melodies daily. Right outside, you’ll spot the beautiful Marienbrunnen fountain.
Rieder Tor & Ried Island (Insel Ried): The Rieder Tor is the only surviving gate of the town’s original four medieval entrances. Passing through it leads you straight onto Insel Ried, a charming small island on the Wörnitz river filled with cafes, local markets, and a relaxing vibe.
Heilig Kreuz Church (Holy Cross): A stunning masterpiece of the late-baroque Wessobrunn school. The pilgrimage church houses a highly revered monstrance containing a historic relic believed to be a fragment of Christ’s true cross.
In addition to these points I highlighted, Donauwörth has other buildings and walking around the city is a delight.
