What to do in Weikersheim in Germany

Like many cities on the Romantic Road, Weikersheim has a very old history. Its foundation dates back to 1313 and it has survived many changes of government and wars.

Its two main sights are the Weikersheim Schloss and Altstadt, its historic center.

Weikersheim Castle in Germany - Tips for the Romantic Route

Weikersheim Castle

The castle was built in the 12th century as the first seat of the Lords of Hohenlohe. The exact year is not known, however the first family member mentioned was Conrad of Weikersheim in 1153.

In 1586, three brothers divided up the Protestant part of the county of Hohenlohe, with Weikersheim, Langenburg and Neuenstein as their main seats. The following year, Wolfgang, Count of Hohenlohe-Weikersheim, rebuilt the medieval castle into a Renaissance palace, together with his wife Madeleine of Nassau-Dillenburg. The tall tower, the Bergfried, however, has been kept as a symbol of its history. The new castle was completed in 1605.

When Count Carl Ludwig inherited Weikersheim in 1709, he began to redecorate the apartments and gardens in their preserved Baroque form. When he died around 1760, his lands were divided between the Langenburg and Neuenstein branches. After World War II, Gottfried, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, invited his cousin Prince Constantin, an artist, to live in the castle and he restored it to its former glory. He also organized operas and concerts. After Langenburg Castle was heavily damaged by fire in 1963, Prince Kraft was forced to sell Weikersheim Palace to the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1967.

Today the palace is a museum, but it also houses the Jeunesses Musicales Germany, festival of folk music and jazz, during summer and Weikersheim Think Tank, a conservative think tank. It is also used for large gatherings and weddings.

Weikersheim Castle, the ancestral seat of the Lords of Hohenlohe, is considered the most beautiful of Hohenlohe castles. Basically a castle with a moat, it was enlarged in the Renaissance style, which is its peculiarity, in the plane of an equilateral triangle. “The artistic design of the hunting and knights hall (1597-1603) is the work of the Rothenburg artist Gerhard Schmidt”. The garden in front of the magnificently developed south wing was created in the 18th century based on the example of Versailles and is one of the first Baroque gardens in Bavaria. It is decorated with many statues.
