Things to do in Schillingsfürst in Germany

The place “Xillingesfirst” is mentioned for the first time in 1000 by Kaiser Otto III. As early as 1300 Schillingsfürst was owned by the House of Hohenlohe. The location and its buildings have undergone changes of ownership and several revolts, including the destruction and reconstruction of its Castle. Until November 4, 1959, the then market town of Schillingsfürst received city rights.

Schloss Schillingsfürst, the Schillingsfürst Castle

The baroque palace of the princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst is a landmark of the city of Schillingsfürst.

In 1316 the castle was destroyed by Ludwig the Bavarian. The rebuilt castle burned down during the Peasants’ War in 1525. The castle, built a third time, was destroyed again in 1632 during the Thirty Years’ War.

Under the rule of Prince Karl Albrecht, Schillingsfürst experienced its first significant expansion through a planned settlement policy from 1753 to 1793. With the formation of the Kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg, the Principality of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst was dissolved. The possessions around Schillingsfürst reached Bavaria and the princes became Imperial Counselors to the Crown of Bavaria.

One of the castle’s owners, Prince Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1819 – 1901), was a German statesman. Between 1866 and 1870 he was Prime Minister of Bavaria and from 1894 to 1900 he was Chancellor of the German Empire and Prime Minister of Prussia. The castle is still owned by the family.

It rises from afar on a mountain spur of the Franconian Hills. Museum rooms and parks point to the heyday of a small princely residence.

Daily guided tours are offered for visitors to the castle museum. Check the official website for ticket prices and updated entry times.

Yenish Heritage Maintenance

Yenish (German: Jenische Sprache) is commonly used to refer to the language used by certain marginalized groups who have led a nomadic or semi-nomadic life in Germany since the early 18th century and in neighboring countries. In fact, the Yenish language is called Taitch.

In the town of Schillingsfürst, on the Marktplatz, the central market square, there is the “Stuppler Monument” which shows a man, a spear and a hedgehog. In the Yenish language, the hedgehog hunter was called Stuppler. Back in the day, hedgehogs were the Sunday roast for poor yen newcomers.

Today, the hedgehog is the city’s unofficial heraldic animal and the municipality presents small chocolate hedgehogs to special guests.

A museum for the Yenish language is being set up where connections will be presented in a loving and humorous way in display boards, photos and comics.
