Things to do in Peiting in Germany
Peiting was first mentioned in a document in 1055, when Duke Welf I of Bavaria erected a castle on the Schlossberg, known as the “new” Castle of Peiting, owned by the Guelphs, a political faction in favor of the papacy and which also it was known as the House of Welf, a European dynasty that included many German and British monarchies from the 11th to the 20th centuries. The castle was known as Welfenburg and due to an earthquake in 1348, it partially collapsed.
In 1438, the Bavarian Duke Ernst granted Peiting market rights. The city of Schongau, another city that forms part of Germany’s Romantic Road, felt that this prominence of Peiting “harmed its liberties” and asked the Duke to deny this right. The request was rejected, and in 1455 Duke Albrecht reconfirmed market rights for the people of Peiting.
In the Thirty Years’ War of 1632, Welfenburg was completely destroyed by the Swedes. At the same time, “hot fever” (probably typhus) broke out, from which about 400 people died in Peiting in 1632. In both the War of the Spanish Succession and the War of the Austrian Succession, enemy troops attacked Peiting, burning it and looting it. -a.
In the course of administrative reforms in Bavaria in 1818, Peiting became an independent political municipality.
After the end of the First World War, a coal mine was built in Peiting. After 1945, 1,500 war refugees arrived in Peiting. In 1957, Peiting Colliery had its highest workforce with 882 miners and 47 employees. In 1958 what was then the largest village in Upper Bavaria was again granted formal market rights. In 1968 the mine was closed, resulting in a brief economic crisis.
Having as main tourist attraction the maintenance of its characteristics of a Bavarian village and also its natural beauty, with emphasis on the Schlossberg, Kalvarienberg, Schnaidberg and Bühlach hills that surround it, Peiting is a place that deserves a visit.
