Viticulture in Lauda-Königshofen – tradition in Tauberfranken

Today, Lauda-Königshofen is pleased to have five independent, family-owned wineries from the villages of Beckstein, Gerlachsheim and Lauda, as well as the Beckstein winegrowers’ cooperative, an association of over of 350 winegrowers in the Tauber Valley wine region with around 265 hectares of vineyards.

Lauda-Königshofen belongs to the Tauberfranken wine-growing region, a wine-growing area of the Baden wine-growing region. Baden is the third largest wine-growing region of Germany’s thirteen regions. Due to the historical affiliation with Franconia, Baden wines from Tauberfranken can be bottled in the traditional Bockstüten. Even today, many Tauber Valleys speak mostly East or Main Franconian and feel like Franconians due to their proximity to the university city of Würzburg.

The “Lovely Tauber Valley” can recall more than 1000 years of winemaking tradition. Between gentle slopes and the tranquil Tauber, from Rothenburg to Wertheim, a wealth of high-quality grape varieties thrive in a good 1100 hectares of vineyards. Since the consolidation of the Napoleonic land, the Tauber Valley was divided into three and therefore belonged to Franconia, Württemberg and Baden, formerly also called Baden Franconia, which is also reflected in the wine law today. Today’s Tauberfranken still benefits from the Bockstüte privilege, but as a member of Baden in wine-growing zone B, it must also meet higher quality standards than Franconia. The Tauber Valley also owes to this ancient winemaking tradition the wealth of artistic monuments and the large number of mansions and residences.

Check out on the city’s official website some places to do tasting and purchase of wines from the region.
