Hohenfurch is a municipality in Germany, located in the district of Weilheim-Schongau, in the state of Bavaria.

Hohenfurch is 88 Km from Munich (approx. 1h15min journey). I haven’t taken the train to the city yet, but it is possible to search if there is any option on the Deutsch Bahn website. Taking the capital of the country as a reference, it is 630 km from Berlin and even though it is far away, it is possible to go by car (approx. 6 hours), in relation to other cities, it is 224 km from Stuttgart (approx. 2h15min) and 427 km from Frankfurt (approx. 4h).

As you can see, we are getting closer to the city of Munich, which becomes the best option in terms of origin and stay for your visit.

How to go to Hohenfurch in Germany

Things to do in Hohenfurch in Germany

The city of Hohenfurchis located in the Schönachtal, a natural valley surrounded by meadows and forests, gateway to the Pfaffenwinkel region of the southern Bavaria, which lies between the Lech and Loisach rivers.

Its importance dates back to Roman times, when the Via Claudia Augusta passed through its areas. The ancient road that connected across the Alps the valley of the River Po, the longest Italian river, with Rhaetia in Germany

This route still exists, and since the 1990s, the growing interest in long-distance walking and cycling has made the German and Austrian sections of Via Claudia Augusta popular with tourists.

In 1785 the area was divided into two pastures, the upper village belonging to the Bishopric of Augsburg and the lower village to the monastery of St. Mang in Füssen. Afterwards, the whole place was exchanged for Steingaden Abbey and thus became part of the Electorate of Bavaria.

In 1818, a municipal decree created the rural community of Hohenfurch, which belonged to the district court of Schongau.

Hohenfurchmay not be as popular as other cities in Germany, but don’t be fooled. Hohenfurch is a smaller but beautiful tourist destination worth visiting.

  • The main tourist attraction is its location and natural beauty, especially on the banks of the Schönach river.
  • The small river Schönach, which runs through the city and connects the formerly separate districts of Oberdorf and Unterdorf, where Here the traveler can enjoy the cozy coolness of summer and the view of the Alps in a rural setting.

• Kirche Maria Himmelfahrt und St. Ursula-Kapelle (Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Chapel of Saint Ursula)
  • The chapel can be seen on top of a green hill. Built between 1520 and 1521, the late Gothic chapel was dedicated to Santa Ursula, patroness of rafts. The ferrymen from Hohenfurch and the surrounding area said their prayers here in thanksgiving for the good return of the wooden ferry ferries, which sailed from the River Lech across the Danube to the Black Sea.
  • The greatest relic of the church is the polyptych of an extraordinary quality. Unfortunately, many of the church’s relics fell victim to thieves, with the exception of a few items, such as the one depicting the martyrdom of Saint Ursula and her companions on the Rhine. Also preserved are the images of St. John the Evangelist and the Magdalene, as well as two reliefs: The Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan and John on the Isle of Patmos.
  • According to legend, Ursula was the daughter of an English king. In the year 452 AD, she is said to have been killed with arrows by Huns on the Rhine, while returning from a pilgrimage to Rome.
  • From the hill of the chapel of St. Ursula, you have a beautiful view of Hohenfurch and its wonderful woods and meadows, which invite both to walk and cycle.

  • In the region you can explore a large network of cycling and hiking trails, as well as other leisure activities such as horse riding, tennis and even winter sports.
  • Long-distance hikers can reach the charming village of Schönach via the Lech-Höhenweg, which leads from Landsberg am Lech to Füssen.
