Things to do in Friedberg in Germany

Settlements in the Friedberg area can be traced back to Roman times through archaeological finds of pottery and masonry in the districts of Hügelshart, Rohrbach. The city is mentioned in historical documents for the first time in Conrad’s charter of protection of the House of Hohenstaufen together with Duke Ludwig II, also called “the Strict”, of Bavaria and the burghers of Augsburg, in 1264.

Fridberch Castle was later built to serve as a frontier security and customs post for the Duchy of Bavaria, but set the city in opposition to the free city of Augsburg. This role soon meant problems with the powerful Augsburgers, who first burned the city to the ground in 1396. Its location often caused problems for the city, as the not uncommon armed skirmishes between Bavaria and Augsburg or Swabia were usually carried out in the rear. from the city.

A revival in the town’s fortunes came when, in 1568, Duchess Christine chose Friedberg Castle as her seat after her husband’s death. The city became the center of Bavarian court life, but it was short-lived when the city was ravaged by the plague in 1599. Further hardship came when the city was twice sacked by the Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War.

After the war, only the town hall, castle and city walls were left standing. The city was soon flourishing again as the Dukes of Bavaria encouraged artisans to settle in the area by establishing guilds in nearby Augsburg. Due to overcrowding, Friedberg offered accommodation to displaced craftsmen who could not find rooms in Augsburg and were not yet master craftsmen.

More positively, the city survived both world wars without major damage.
