Things to do in Friedberg in Germany
Settlements in the Friedberg area can be traced back to Roman times through archaeological finds of pottery and masonry in the districts of Hügelshart, Rohrbach. The city is mentioned in historical documents for the first time in Conrad’s charter of protection of the House of Hohenstaufen together with Duke Ludwig II, also called “the Strict”, of Bavaria and the burghers of Augsburg, in 1264.
Fridberch Castle was later built to serve as a frontier security and customs post for the Duchy of Bavaria, but set the city in opposition to the free city of Augsburg. This role soon meant problems with the powerful Augsburgers, who first burned the city to the ground in 1396. Its location often caused problems for the city, as the not uncommon armed skirmishes between Bavaria and Augsburg or Swabia were usually carried out in the rear. from the city.
A revival in the town’s fortunes came when, in 1568, Duchess Christine chose Friedberg Castle as her seat after her husband’s death. The city became the center of Bavarian court life, but it was short-lived when the city was ravaged by the plague in 1599. Further hardship came when the city was twice sacked by the Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War.
After the war, only the town hall, castle and city walls were left standing. The city was soon flourishing again as the Dukes of Bavaria encouraged artisans to settle in the area by establishing guilds in nearby Augsburg. Due to overcrowding, Friedberg offered accommodation to displaced craftsmen who could not find rooms in Augsburg and were not yet master craftsmen.
More positively, the city survived both world wars without major damage.
Top tourist attractions
The most interesting tourist attractions that can be included in your travel itinerary in Friedberg are:
- Wittelsbacher Schloss (Wittelsbach Castle)
- Friedberg’s main landmark is Wittelsbach Castle. The complex is characterized by the Renaissance style and is surrounded by a moat called Halsgraben, in Portuguese Neck.
- The well-preserved monument dates back to a tall medieval castle complex of the Dukes of Bavaria and today houses the municipal museum of local history, with various thematic exhibitions, as well as function rooms.
- Rathaus (City Hall)
- The current Friedberg Renaissance town hall was built in 1680 after it was destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War. It is worth noting that its tower was rebuilt in 1911.
- Look on the south side of the building for a plaque commemorating the visit of Pope Pius VI, who traveled from Vienna to Augsburg via Friedberg on May 2, 1782. In the meeting room, where city council meetings are held, there are well-preserved frescoes by the Munich historical painter Josef Widmann from 1892.
- Stadtmauer (Historic city wall)
- The wall was built by Duke Ludwig the Strict around 1264 as part of city planning. The wooden fortification gave way to a brick wall in 1409-1412, including its connection to the castle fortifications.
- In addition to large parts of the wall, 14 defense towers are still intact, unfortunately the gates were removed in the 19th century.
- Wallfahrtskirche Herrgottsruh (Pilgrimage Church “Rest of Our Lord”)
- The pilgrimage church “Rest of Our Lord”, in German Herrgottsruh, was built between 1731 and 1753 and is one of the most beautiful works of Bavarian Rococo. Some of the most important artists of the period were involved, creating a spatial artwork of remarkable consistency in terms of content and form.
- In the 2000s, the building underwent extensive restoration work, renewing the original colors of its exterior and interior, in particular the church nave.
- Stadtpfarrkirche St. Jakob (St. Jakob Parish Church)
- Since the city was founded in 1264, there has been a church dedicated to the apostle James, called in German St. Jakob. Its red and white striped façade has a decisive influence on Friedberg’s skyline.
- The church was destroyed in the 30 Years’ War and greatly affected by the wear and tear of time. The current building was finally completed in 1881 and consecrated by Bishop Pankratius von Dinkel of Augsburg.
- In the church there is a 13th-century memorial stone, considered a masterpiece of Gothic quarrying, in honor of Duke Ludwig the Bearded over the city fortifications he had begun.
In addition to the points listed, be sure to explore Friedberg and admire the city’s alleys and buildings.
