What to do in Creglingen in Germany
The history of Creglingen begins with its foundation by the Celts between 200 and 100 BC. until in 1349, it received its city charter from Emperor Karl IV.
It starts to draw more attention and attract visitors when in 1386 there is the construction of the Herrgottskirche (Church of Our Lord) by the lords of Hohenlohe-Brauneck.
Herrgottskirche: Evangelical Lutheran Church of Creglingen
The main attraction of the town of Creglingen is the Herrgottskirche, home to the Marienretable, a masterpiece of late Gothic sculpture by Tilman Riemenschneider, famous German sculptor, known mainly for his works in wood and stone.
The story of the construction of the church, which became a pilgrimage chapel, begins after a reported discovery of an intact communion wafer by a peasant plowing his field in 1384. This wafer was considered the cause of miracles and the people flocked to the place. Then the local lords, Konrad and Gottfried von Hohenlohe-Brauneck, had a Gothic chapel built between 1386-96. At the height of the pilgrimage, around 1500, several altars were commissioned that remain in the church to this day.
The central altar of Riemenschneider was built on the spot where the host would have been found. The figures are made of linden wood, the kind often used by sculptors, and their surrounding frames of pine. With a total height of 11 meters, the altar dominated the small church.
The church survived the Protestant Reformation that hit the area in 1530, as its iconoclasm spared the local church. However, as the Assumption of Mary depicted was offensive to Protestant congregations, the main altar wings were closed.
As a result, the fact that the altar wings remained closed and the ensemble was covered by funeral wreaths until 1832, this maintained its good state of conservation.
Top tourist attractions
In addition to the Herrgottskirche, the city also has other attractions to include in your travel itinerary:
- Altstadt
- The historic center of Creglingen with several half-timbered houses, in particular the buildings: Kirchenstaffel, Schlosserbuck, Romschlössle and their gardens.
- Jüdisches Museum Creglingen
- The Jewish Museum Creglingen shows the regional roots and peculiarities of Jewish life in Creglingen. It describes the paths and destinies that led Franconian Jews from their home country to foreign countries and brings back memories of the common past of Jews and non-Jews.
- Lindleinturm-Museum
- The Lindlein Tower served as a defense and watchtower for the medieval fortifications of the town of Creglingen. In 1795, the owner at the time had a half-timbered structure placed on the stone base to make the tower habitable. The city became owner of the tower as early as 1979. The originally furnished tower has been open to the public since 1999 and as a Museum offers an insight into the lifestyle of its last resident, Margarethe Böttcher.
- Fingerhutmuseum
- The Thimble Museum opened in 1982 and you can see thimbles of all kinds and other sewing utensils from the “thimbles’ guild”. It is located in the coal mill near the Herrgottskirche.
- Kloster Frauental
- The monastery is about 5 km from Creglingen and was founded in 1232 as a Cistercian monastery. In 1525, a large part of the monastery was destroyed during the Peasants’ War, but it still maintained much of its buildings. It is divided into an upper church and a lower church. As a curiosity, it is also worth visiting as it probably has the only mummies in the churches of the State of Baden-Württemberg. There is also a museum “from the monastery to the village” installed in the former gallery of the nuns since 1990.
