Marché de Noël, Strasbourg Christmas Market 2024

Strasbourg Christmas Market takes place from 27 November to 27 December 2024

For over 400 years, the Strasbourg Christmas Market has immersed locals and visitors from all over the world in the friendly atmosphere of the Alsatian end-of-year celebrations, around its cathedral and the Grand Sapin. Every year, efforts are being made to renew the format to become “more authentic and more inclusive”.

One of the most famous Christmas markets in the Alsace region, the fair in the lovely Strasbourg, or Straßbourg in French ,  (when we went it was called Capitale de Noel , today it seems to have changed its name to Marché de Noël ). So, off we went to see what makes it so popular… And isn’t it cool!

Lots and lots of people – Cathedral in the background

The Capitale de Noel (or Marché de Noël) in Strasbourg in France takes place in the Place de la Cathédrale and other squares in the city from 11/27/2024 until 12/27/2024 .

The smell of Glühwein , hazelnuts, chestnuts and all the other caramelized nuts, the cute Christmas decorations… Oh! It’s really so good! It’s a shame that in the 35ºC heat of Brazil it’s hard to do this… it has to be cold and snowy to have this magic. 🙂

Where celebrations take place in Strasbourg Christmas Market

Since the city is much larger than the city we live in in Germany, there are several small parts of the fair spread out in strategic points of the historic center, such as the cathedral square, place Gutenberg, place Kléber (where the beautiful and huge Christmas tree is located) and so on. A month before it starts, the city hall of Strasbourg makes available on the internet a folder with the entire schedule of the Christmas fair, which usually starts in the last week of November and goes until the first week of January. Everything is well explained and organized.

Since it gets dark early at Christmas time, around 4pm, we chose the late afternoon to see the decorations lit up and it was a great decision. However, you need to be very (very) patient, because the city is packed with people! There is traffic!! Seriously!!! 😛
