History of the Natural History Museum of Karlsruhe

The Natural History Museum in Karlsruhe, or in German Naturkundemuseum, started its collection in 1752, but it was in 1785 that it can be visited, which means that it is open to the public. public for over 200 years.

Its current building dates from 1872, but due to its destruction by bombs in the Second World War, it needed to be rebuilt, which was completed in 1972 (100 years after its inauguration).

Today it is one of two natural history museums in the state of Baden-Württemberg and is visited by 150,000 people every year.

Areas of Naturkundemuseum Karlsruhe

The museum has two floors accessible to the public, divided into several areas of interest, such as:

  • Dioramas: the scenarios with wild animals of the German fauna are very interesting.

  • Insects: very interesting, with several preserved insects and some small nurseries with live insects, we really like the insect sounding totems.
  • Climates and nurseries: in this area there is an assembly with the evolution of terrestrial aquatic areas and also a nursery with lizards and fish.
  • Inspired by Nature and Aquariums: the main aquarium, with fish, stingrays and a shark is beautiful, as is the aviary with alligators and turtles, but what really caught my attention was the aviary with spiders.

  • Minerals: for those who like , is a find, it has several types of minerals and information about.
  • Geology: the most interesting in this area are the equipment used and an earthquake simulator.

Olivia loved seeing the aquarium, dinosaur statues and also the aquariums!

Temporary Exhibitions

Like other museums, the Natural History Museum Karlsruhe also has some temporary special exhibitions. On our visit, “Hippos on the Upper Rhine” was on display about animals that lived during the Ice Age in the Upper Rhine valley region of the state of Hesse.

Some dioramas were created with a rhino, a buffalo and even a wolverine, the famous animal that inspired the character Wolverine from Marvel. In addition, it is possible to smell the common smell of the time and some bones and fossils.
