In 2024, the Ettlinger Sternlesmarkt will be open daily from 28 November to 29 December 2024 from 11 am to 9 pm and on 24 December from 11 am to 2 pm on the Marktplatz, the market square in front of Ettlingen town hall.
The Ettlinger Sternlesmarkt, the Christmas Market in Ettlingen, Germany, is, in my humble opinion, a perfect Christmas market. The market is typical of small German towns: small, compact and concentrated only around the Marktplatz, the city’s main shopping square, often close to the town hall and other important buildings.

Where is Ettlingen in Germany
Ettlingen is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, about 8 kilometres south of the city of Karlsruhe and approximately 15 kilometres from the border with Lauterbourg, in France’s Bas-Rhin department. Ettlingen is the second largest town in the district of Karlsruhe, after Bruchsal.

But size doesn’t matter and the market has all the standard attractions of a German Christmas Market, such as stalls selling Glühwein and Kinderpunsch (mulled wine with or without alcohol), Wurst (German sausages) with Pommes (fried potatoes), Raclette (typical Swiss cheese melted on delicious bread), Crepes and, of course, Lango (fried dough with various topping options) whose stalls form loooong lines.
For children, there is the carousel that is over 35 years old and, according to the owner, has undergone almost no changes since it began operating. Another interesting fact is that the carousel is a fast and furious type , it spins very, very fast… the children love it, but us parents are left with our hair standing on end. 😮
There is also a very cute little train that goes around a typical Christmas village.
The best part about small Christmas markets is seeing the people who come to them: what we see most are families with their parents who have just finished work, groups of teenagers who have just finished school and groups of old men and women, usually wearing Santa hats, having a great time near the little Glühwein and Wurst houses. It’s a really nice atmosphere to see and be a part of.
Another interesting fact is that every Christmas market has its own Pyramid, which is actually a tower on top of a food stand with a rotating propeller at the top. You can see it in the photo of Ettlinger Sternlesmarkt to understand it better. This delights all children, you can’t go wrong. 🙂
And since it’s not all about eating, you can buy home decor items, jewelry, candles and woolen clothes to help you cope with the cold weather that is already in full swing. But if it really gets cold, just go back to the food stalls and stuff yourself again.
