Christmas Markets in Vienna and Salzburg, Austria – Complete Guide 2023

Mulled wine, decorations and a giant Christmas tree, Vienna and Salzburg in Austria look beautiful with their Christmas lights and markets.

To help with your trip, we’ve listed the best Christmas Markets in Vienna and Salzburg, with tips and updated information for 2023. Don’t forget to brave the cold and visit Austria during the Advent and end-of-year festivities.

Vienna Christmas Markets Tour

Get into the Christmas spirit with this walking tour of some of Vienna’s traditional Christmas Markets and marvel at the decorations and crafts that reflect the season. Warm up with hot punches and enjoy Christmas treats from the shelves.

Immerse yourself in the traditions of the holiday season with hot punch boosted by extra rum and Christmas cookies to munch on along the way. Hear fun stories, see modern and traditional Christmas markets, stroll the hidden streets of trendy neighborhoods, and much more.

Christmas Market on Vienna’s Town Hall Square

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz , the Christmas Market on Vienna’s Town Hall Square, is the most popular and best-known in the city. Its biggest highlight is the Christmas tree in its center.

There are dozens of stalls offering crafts, gifts, decorations and, of course, typical Christmas food and drinks. Although it is always very crowded, it is a must-see place to experience Christmas in Vienna.

Christmas Village at Belvedere Palace

Weihnachtsdorf im Wiener Schloss Belvedere is not very big, there are just over 40 stalls in the courtyard of the Belvedere Palace. And its location is exactly the biggest attraction of the Christmas fair: the beauty of Belvedere, the lake and gardens around it make the experience special.

Like every Christmas market, you will find crafts, decorations, gifts and food and drink, both Christmas and typically Austrian.

Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace

The Kultur- & Weihnachtsmarkt Neujahrsmarkt Schloss Schönbrunn takes place in the courtyard in front of Vienna’s main tourist attraction, Schönbrunn Palace.

There are more than 80 stalls offering crafts, gifts, decorations and, of course, Christmas food and drinks, such as mulled wine and roasted almonds. Highlight is the Christmas tree that adds a festive atmosphere to your visit during the Advent period.

We selected three to be included in any travel itinerary, but there are other Christmas markets in Vienna, such as Spittelberg , Stephansplatz square or Museumsquartier .

Christmas market at Residenzplatz and Salzburg Cathedral

The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt Am Domplatz Und Residenzplatz is one of the most beautiful and oldest Christmas markets in the world, held since 1974. It is held in the middle of Salzburg’s old town, which makes its atmosphere even more beautiful.

In addition to the stalls with Christmas shopping, drinks and food options, the Christmas fair also offers attractions such as parades, music, nativity scenes and Christmas decorations.

Hellbrunn Advent Magic Christmas Market in Salzburg

The Hellbrunner Adventzauber has been held in front of Hellbrunn Palace for almost 20 years. You will find a huge Advent calendar, created with 24 facade windows. In the garden, you can stroll through a fairytale forest with trees decorated with Christmas decorations and lights.

On the same grounds as the caves and fountains, visitors can now marvel at an eight-meter-high Christmas angel. Spotlights and a vent transform the angel into a dynamic sculpture with his floating outfit.

The Christmas fair also has stalls with gift options, decorations and food and drinks for visitors of all ages.

Salzburg Christmas Market on Mirabell Square

Close to the Residenz and the Dom (Salzburg Cathedral), the Weihnachtsmarkt am Mirabellplatz is very well located, especially for those using public transport. The square is less than 1km from the city’s main station.

Even though it’s small, the Christmas fair has several stalls offering winter food and drinks, such as mulled wine, as well as gift and decoration options.

We selected three to be included in any travel itinerary, but, like Vienna, there are other Christmas markets in Salzburg, such as St. Leonhard or Hohensalzburg .
