The Christmas Market in the town of Oberursel in Germany, the Oberurseler Weihnachtsmarkt takes place on the first weekend of Advent, from Thursday, November 28, to Sunday, December 1, 2024.
We were visiting friends in Frankfurt and took the opportunity to visit Oberursel and its Christmas Market, which, as you know, we love.
We have published a calendar of the German Christmas Markets in 2024, be sure to check it out.
Where is the Oberursel Christmas Market
The Christmas Market stretches from the Market Square, through Strackgasse and Vorstadt, to Rathausplatz, and then along Kumeliusstrasse to Epinayplatz. The historic Market Square is home to the traditional Medieval Christmas Market. Clubs gather at Rathausplatz, and those who prefer a more intimate setting can enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the Christmas Village. Epinayplatz is a particular highlight for families, children and seniors, with activities such as steam train rides and carousels providing fun for all ages.
Oberursel Christmas Market in Germany in 2024
The first interesting fact is that the Oberursel Christmas market is much more like a medieval market. And this characteristic was even more apparent because we arrived in the city in the dark, because the sun sets very early in winter.
The Christmas Market takes place in the shopping center with more than 80 stalls connecting several streets and squares, the main one being Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square). There are stalls selling handicrafts, Christmas-themed souvenirs and, of course, lots of food and drink.
And at least when we went it was quite crowded. Since it only takes place on one weekend of the year, the market must really attract a lot of people, just a warning.
Opening hours:
- Thursday, November 28, 2024: 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
- Friday, November 29, 2024: 2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
- Saturday, November 30, 2024: 12:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
- Sunday, December 1, 2024: 12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
What impressed us the most was the pork barbecue stand on a roller! It was really amazing, we didn’t hesitate to wait in line and try it. It was worth it. Another stand we recommend trying is the one right across the street that serves several types of Glühwein and Mead. An excellent combination to resist the cold of December in Germany.
And for the kids, there are some fun options, like the train ride around the big Christmas tree or the carousel, which Olivinha loved.
There are two websites with more information about the Oberursel Christmas Market:
- The city’s official website , with the events calendar
- A website specialized in German Christmas Markets .
Unfortunately, both are in German, but using Google Translator it is possible to search for information.
In any case, even though it is a relatively small Christmas Market, especially when compared to the one in Frankfurt, if you have some free time in the city, it is worth a visit.
