Christmas Market in Heidelberg
The Christmas market in Heidelberg, Germany, overlooks the beautiful castle, where you can admire the Christmas market with plenty of Glühwein and Christmas food. In the old part of the city, the Christmas market is divided into six separate areas. It stretches from the Bismarckplatz traffic junction to the small but beautiful Anatomiegarten, the largest Christmas market with around 70 stalls on Universitätsplatz, the market characterized by the involvement of clubs and the Christmas pyramid over the Heidelberg Winterwäldchen on Kornmarkt to Karlsplatz.
How to get to the Christmas Market in Heidelberg
Getting to Heidelberg is easy. The city is close to the main road that runs through Germany heading south, the A5 Autobahn. There are several accessible parking lots near where the Christmas Market is held.
Those who need to use public transport can also rest assured, as it is only a 15-minute walk from the Hauptbanhof to the city’s tourist area.
What is the Christmas Market like in Heidelberg?
The Heidelberg Christmas market is divided into several small parts of the historic city center. So we focused on the coolest parts, which are concentrated in Marktplatz and Karlsplatz .
In fact, it is from Karlsplatz that you have one of the most beautiful views of the city! Just look up to see the castle in all its grandeur and it is also in this square that you will find the skating rink and the little train for children.
The Marktplatz is where the food and drink stalls are located, as well as the Pyramid , the tower with what looks like propellers on top that is found at every German Christmas market. As it was snowing, everything was much more magical and, consequently, we needed several Glühwein to warm us up.
From Marktplatz we decided to face the cold that was starting to set in and headed towards the Neckar River and the beautiful old bridge, the Alte Brücke Heidelberg . From there we could see the entire city covered in fresh snow with the castle in the background.
I can say that there is no better view of the city than this and at this time of year! 😮
Here’s a tip : Anyone going to “hunt” for Christmas markets in Germany should be prepared for low temperatures and occasional snowy days. As the snow melts, it mixes with salt and more snow, forming a nasty slush that could cause anyone to slip. So to avoid any accidents during your trip, it’s important to have shoes with appropriate soles.
