Guide 2024 to the Christmas Market and Medieval Market in the city of Pforzheim in the state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany.
The Medieval Market ( Mittelaltermarkt ) in Pforzheim is open daily from 25 November to 30 December 2024 from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Blumenhof and Barfussergasse. The Christmas Market ( Goldener Pforzheimer Weihnachtsmarkt ) is open from 25 November to 22 December 2024 on weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Every year we try to visit a new Christmas Market here in Germany and this time we chose to visit the city of Pforzheim, located in the north of the Black Forest, between the cities of Karlsruhe and Stuttgart.
An interesting fact about Pforzheim that I discovered while researching for this post is that it was the target of one of the most massive attacks by the Allied Forces in World War II. For 22 minutes, the city of just 80,000 inhabitants received 1,500 tons of bombs, destroying 80% of all its buildings. And even today, on the edge of the city, there is a 40-meter-high mound of rubble from this destruction.
But returning to our festive theme, the main attraction of the Pforzheim Christmas Market is that it takes place next to the Medieval Market.
So after a little less than 1 hour by train, we arrived at Pforzheim Hauptbahnhof to have our well-deserved Glühwein.
We have published a calendar of the German Christmas Markets in 2024, be sure to check it out.
Pforzheim’s Christmas and Medieval Market
We arrived and entered the Medieval Market area, which was a pleasant surprise. The stalls offered rustic foods, hot drinks and games based on the Middle Ages. I really liked the mead made with guarana, although it was sweet it wasn’t sickening.
The craft stalls are an attraction in themselves. There are also some medieval activities such as musical bands or artisans, which was the case during our visit.
Olivia loved playing on the manual Ferris wheel! Yes, manual, two men spin the toy with the children, probably the same way it was done in the old days.
Then we went to see the Christmas Market itself, which isn’t exactly a big market. It’s all set up on a single sidewalk, and although it has some beautiful stalls, it’s not that attractive.
We had a drink and ate something, walked around and left.
So here’s a tip: the city of Pforzheim is a great option if you want to visit a Medieval Market in Germany, without forgetting the Christmas spirit, of course.
