To lighten the pocket of German residents and tourists due to rising fuel and living costs, the German government has created a nationwide discounted travel pass for the summer months, more specifically the months of June, July and August of this year.
For 9 euros, you can travel all over Germany for a whole month. You can use the ticket on all local and regional public transport, such as RB, RE, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus and tram.

Where and how to buy the €9 Ticket in Germany?
Dubbed “9 for 90” (9 euros per month for 90 days), all customers will be able to use this special offer and will be able to buy the ticket before the start of the three month period. The ticket will be available through channels such as bahn.de, the DB Navigator application and the ticket offices at the stations.
The website to buy the €9 ticket is: Fahrkarten Bahn.
And the link to the app in the mobile stores are: iPhone, Android and Huawei.
Importantly, you will need to buy a ticket in each of the scheduled months, that is, if you use the promotion for the three months, the total cost will be 27 euros (3 x 9 euros).
It is worth mentioning that the tickets will have the name of the person who bought them and cannot be used by someone else.
The €9 ticket does not entitle you to ICE (Intercity Express), IC (Intercity), EC (Eurocity) long-distance travel or Thalys connections. Other private operators such as FlixTrain are also not participating in the scheme. They cannot be used to travel in first class coaches.
Importantly, if you are traveling with a dog or a bicycle, you must pay the additional fee. Check the price at ATMs or train stations in your city.
How long is the €9 ticket valid?
The ticket will be available for purchase from June 1, 2022 to August 31, 2022. And it will be valid for one month, more specifically, from 00:00 on the 1st to 24:00 on the 30th/ 31 of each of the three months.
Importantly, each ticket has a fixed expiry date, this means that, for example, if you buy your ticket on June 1st or 15th, the ticket will expire on June 30th.
Where can the €9 ticket be used in Germany?
The ticket is restricted to domestic connections within Germany, although certain exceptions nevertheless apply. Ticket holders can, for example, take a Bavarian regional train (BRB) to nearby Salzburg and Kufstein, Austria.
Similarly, the transport association in Aachen, in the extreme west of Germany, offers selected services to the Netherlands and Belgium, which can be used with a €9 ticket.
If you are planning a trip abroad, check the Deutsche Bahn website or contact your regional transport association in advance.
How can I see which trips I can take with my 9 Euro Ticket?
As stated, the ticket can be used on local and regional transport. With that in mind, you can plan your trip by combining several of them and go anywhere in the Federal Republic of Germany. It just takes a lot longer than on fast trains like the ICE.
See how to set up a trip on regional trains:
- Access bahn.com/en.
- Where it says “Timetable & Booking“, enter the origin of your trip and your destination.
- IMPORTANT: Check the box that says “Local transport only“.
- Click on the red “Search“ button.
